The process of making coffee is regarded by many as an art form. As such equipment is used at each stage of the process is essential in determining the final outcome. Coffee can be made using one of several methods, the coffee can be boiled, steeped, or pressured.
Percolators or automatic coffeemakers use the effect of gravity to brew coffee. In these machines, hot water is allowed to flow over the coffee grounds which are held in a coffee filter. This filter is done either by paper or perforated metal and allows water to pass through the ground coffee, thus creating a liquid infused with the aroma and taste of ground coffee beans.
Coffee May also be brewed using alternative methods. One such example is to make coffee using a device known as a French press. In this method, ground coffee and hot water are combined in a coffee press and left to steep for a period of time. A piston is then used to remove the coffee from the container, leaving the ground coffee at the bottom of the device.
An espresso machine forces hot water under pressure through ground coffee. This method of brewing under high pressure means that the final product as much as 10 to 15 times the amount coffee to water ratio as the coffee brewed using other methods.
